Studies assessing physiological changes related to the survival of sharks during captures have significantly contributed to their conservation, considering that the stress response of these individuals during bycatch can lead to sub-lethal consequences even if released immediately. Therefore, the objective of this study was to understand, through physiological biomarkers, the impact of seasonality on the stress response during capture in juvenile male nurse sharks (Ginglymostoma cirratum). Samples (N=81) were collected between 2017-2021 in Biscayne Bay, Florida. Blood samples were centrifuged to separate the plasma. Concentrations of L -lactate (mmol/L), TP - total proteins (g/dL), CL - chloride (mmol/L), T - triglycerides (mg/dL), C - cholesterol (mg/dL), and G - glucose (mmol/L) were quantified using Labtest® kits and colorimetric methods. Summer (L: 2.76±1.07, G: 1.31±0.38, CL: 52.11±3.78, TP: 3.20±0.55, T: 21.63±7.12, C: 54.64±24.01), fall (L: 2.33±1.22, G: 1.33±0.39, CL: 51.16±3.28, TP: 2.93±0.48, T: 24.45±16.99, C: 51.06±15.21), winter (L: 1.82±0.79, G: 0.92±0.31, CL: 50.77±3.28, TP: 3.46±0.81, T: 19.07±6.30, C: 37.56±6.79), and spring (L: 1.87±1.08, G: 0.99±0.34, CL: 50.72±3.93, TP: 3.46±0.76, T: 19.68±6.73, C: 42.24±16.34). Statistical analyses were made with ANOVA test fallowed by Tukey test, and it was observed that summer is the season that showed significant change in the individuals physiology. There is an increase in lactate and glucose concentrations during the summer, possibly due to elevated glucocorticoids in the bloodstream. Additionally, cholesterol also had a significant change in summer. One hypothesis is that, due to changes in environmental conditions, juveniles may need to adjust their feeding strategies to meet their energy demands. Therefore, nutritional condition can be a potential problem, influencing the stress intensity caused by capture. As a more stress-resistant species, the nurse shark might serve as a model for studying and developing strategies that aid in conservation."

Resumo

Currently, 37% of elasmobranchii species are on the IUCN Red List. As a more stress-resistant species, the nurse shark might serve as a model for studying and developing strategies that aid in conservation.
